Chile: environmental approval sought for almost 300 MW

Two solar energy developers in Chile submitted Declarations of Environmental Impact (DIA) for three new photovoltaic projects worth more than US$600 million to Chile’s environmental evaluation service (SEA) over the last ten days.

Malaysia: 20 MW solar quota postponed

The release of a new 20 MW quota for small-scale photovoltaic installations in Malaysia has been postponed until Q1 2013. The FIT quota is for installations smaller than 500 kW and was scheduled to be released on December 17th.

SunEdison signs 85 MW of PPAs

Photovoltaic integrator SunEdison has announced the signing of 85 MW of PPAs, with utilities in California. The five PPAs in total have been signed with Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas and Electric and Riverside – one the first Californian municipal utilities to sign a PPA of this size.

Yingli posts $150 million Q3 loss

While basking in the glow of its largest ever supply deal, Yingli Green Energy has posted a substantial loss for Q3 2012. The net loss of U.S. $152.6 million is an increase on the loss of $92 million in Q2, and $29 million in Q3 2011.

South Africa: SunEdison closes funding on 58 MW

SunEdison has announced today that it has closed US$314 million in financing for two utility scale photovoltaic power plants in South Africa. Plans to develop the 30 MW Witkop Solar Park and the 28 MW Soutpan Solar Park can now go ahead.

Emerging markets to grow to 12 GW p.a. by 2017

IHS has plotted the shift away from established markets towards emerging markets in its latest photovoltaic market report. It has forecast cumulative demand of around 30 GW to be delivered by the emerging markets over the next four years.

Q3 "turning point" for China Sunergy

China Sunergy CEO Stephen Cai has suggested that the company’s Q3 financial results, released today, indicate a “turning point” for the company. The cell and module manufacturer posted a net loss of US$23.2 million for the quarter, an improvement on a net loss of $30.3 million in Q2.

Australian report pushes 100% renewable energy future

A new report, released today by Australia’s Climate Commission, has made the case for a vastly expanded role for renewable energy in the country. The report argues that Australia is currently in “critical decade” in which a transition towards renewable energy, including photovoltaics, is made.

Further UK PV FIT cuts unlikely amid weak capacity growth

Solar capacity growth for the August to October period appears to be below the level required to trigger further feed-in tariff (FIT) cuts in February, according to figures released today by the U.K.’s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).
