EvoEnergy installs Panasonic HIT solar modules to power UBS’ new financial services HQ

The system features atop 5 Broadgate in the heart of London’s Mile Square and financial district. A total of 576 Panasonic N240 solar modules were selected to deliver maximum system output on a very crowded roof, with an expected annual output of 108,104 kWh offsetting over 57 tonnes of CO2 per year.

5 Broadgate is part of the vibrant Broadgate commercial hub adjacent to London’s Liverpool Street Station. The project includes the redevelopment of previous buildings 4 and 6 Broadgate costing close to £350 million. The building is scheduled to be completed in early 2016 and will become UBS’ new base of UK financial services featuring four football pitch sized trading floors across 12 floors.

The building has been designed and constructed by respected Architects Mace, who in collaboration with developer British Land and UBS, had a chief objective to integrate a variety of sustainable design and technology to create a leading example of sustainable building in the heart of the world’s financial capital. In addition to the featured solar system, Broadgate 5 includes a 700 square foot green roof space, modern waste management systems and machine bloc windows, courtyards and terraces.

When integrating the system, EvoEnergy faced a number of design and logistical challenges, particularly around the height of 5 Broadgate, which has restrictions of 75 metres to prevent potential obstructions to surrounding views of St Pauls Cathedral. EvoEnergy designed a bespoke SunFixing base featuring 4 types of mounting system to ensure Panasonic’s HIT modules had a maximum installation angle of 5 degrees to meet these height restrictions.
