Seville, October 3, 2016. The Spanish company IHT obtained a 3 sun concentration factor for its holographic solar device. The certification institute Tecnalia ensures that, when submitted to measurements, the module shows a concentration factor of 2,83X and the holograms did not deteriorate after being put in a vacuum chamber during 1000h at 85°C.
This proves that the holograms developed and used by IHT as an optical element are able to be concentrate the light three times on the cell surface, endorsing the name that the Andalusian R&D company gave to the photovoltaic module: SoHo3X.
This verification means a great acknowledgment to our research and development efforts, and brings us closer to our goals: revolutionise, personalise, and socialise solar energy, states Antonio Calo, IHTs Managing Director.
SoHo3X is a low concentration solar device which uses holographic technology as an distinctive optical element, requiring 70 per cent less cell area than a conventional photovoltaic module. Besides a significant price reduction in contrast to the usual lenses or mirrors used in concentration technology, the hologram design allows the light to be concentrated with both the optimum angle and spectrum required by the cell. This is why no mechanical tracing system is needed.
The passive tracing, alongside with its semi V-shape particular design, grants the device with great versatility. The holographic technology allows solar devices to be installed horizontally and vertically, making them particularity suitable for energy efficiency solutions in buildings and urban furniture, explains Calo.
An example is the solar luminary SoHo3X Street Lighting released at the last EUPVSEC 2016 in Munich (Germany). Integrating the modules in the pole allows IHT to reach streetlight heights up to 14 meters and powers up to 600 watt peak.
Not only the pertinent tests to obtain the international certificates are currently underway, but also institutions in France, Finland, Australia, Japan, Portugal, Chile and Saudi Arabia have shown interest to test the holographic solar device. With Saudi Arabia, IHT has signed a MOU (Memorandum of understanding) for the implementation of a holographic solar streetlight factory that guarantees nearly 300 million euros in the first five years (900 MWP annual production).
About IHT
Instituto Holográfico Terrasun (IHT) operates since 2014 a pilot plant in El Puerto de Santa María (province of Cádiz, Southern Spain) with a holographic film manufacturing capacity of up to 20 equivalent megawatts. Expansion plans foresee a 40 megawatt factory, which could be running by the end of 2016, and expand its annual capacity until 900 equivalent megawatts in 2020. The manufacturing process is property of IHT and unique in the world. It allows to achieve large annual volumes of high optical efficiency holograms at a cost between 15 and 50 euros per square meter, depending on the application. No other optics offer the advantages of holography at such low cost.
