Analog Devices’ Power Conversion Platform Improves Safety, Reliability and Efficiency in Renewable Energy Applications

Analog Devices Inc. today announced its fully integrated power conversion platform for next-generation solar power, energy storage, and electric vehicle infrastructure applications. The platform, which includes processing, gate driving, and sensing components, was designed to enable new faster-switching architectures and accommodate increasing safety regulations. By integrating ADI’s established iCoupler digital isolation technology with the new, breakthrough mixed-signal processor design (ADSP-CM41x), the platform simplifies system design for power inverter manufacturers while also improving system safety and reliability, and helping drive down the cost of renewable energy.

Power systems must be carefully designed to protect the end user from electric shock and the system from physical destruction by isolating current measurement from the power-handling circuitry and transient signals. Traditionally this protection has come at a price as the use of multiple redundant isolated components drives up both cost and system complexity. Analog Devices recently announced the ADSP-CM41x processor series, which features a revolutionary new design that integrates dual-core safety redundancy into a single chip. The ADSP-CM41x is an integral part of the power conversion platform, and is now the first and only processor of its kind to be awarded a Certificate of Safety Attestation, VDE-AR-N4105, from TUV-SUD. This provides designers with added confidence in their own certification process and a pathway to faster, more cost-efficient system development.
Also included in the platform are the AD740x sigma-delta-based A/D converter, which replaces larger, more expensive sensor modules to reduce system cost and improve isolated current measurement, and the ADuM413x series of isolated gate drivers, featuring iCoupler digital isolation technology.
To assist developers in evaluating and designing with the platform, Analog Devices also announced the release of a new evaluation kit, the ADZS-CM419F-EZLITE. The kit is available now for $410.00.

SunLink VP Clara Nagy Debates Solar Mounting Cost Reduction Roadmap at GTM Solar Summit 2016

SunLink Corporation’s Vice President of Sales Clara Nagy will join other solar industry executives and thought leaders on The Roadmap to Low Cost Ground Mount Balance of Systems panel at today’s Greentech Media’s Solar Summit 2016 in Scottsdale, Ariz. As part of the panel discussion, Nagy will outline the immediate and long-term strategies SunLink is pursuing to lower balance of systems costs and help its customer partners successfully navigate the evolving global solar market.
“SunLink’s evolution into a full-scope solar project solutions company that offers highly engineered mounting solutions together with expert installation and O&M services and an advanced software platform positively impacts both hard and soft project costs for our customers. Now, customers are able to procure a combination of the most advanced mounting solutions, trusted services and next-gen data monitoring and SCADA controls provided by our hybrid cloud and security platform in an integrated package from a single partner, which reduces both their capital and portfolio management costs,” explains Nagy.
“I look forward to demonstrating how EnTech software platforms like VERTEX change solar project economics for the better,” continued Nagy. “In addition, I’m eager to share how our industry leading R&D program is moving beyond the lab to collect real-time project performance data from the field using Internet of Things technology as a means to reduce material costs by enabling dynamic designs. Thanks to innovation inspired by EnTech convergence, the roadmap to lower costs has never been so interesting or exciting.”
To see Clara Nagy at the Solar Summit, attend the balance of systems panel, The Roadmap to Low Cost Ground Mount Balance of Systems, today, May 11, at 3:00pm local time. meteocontrol installs monitoring systems for 130 MWp PV power in Great Britain

meteocontrol GmbH has equipped six British solar parks belonging to BayWa r.e. renewable energy GmbH with its monitoring systems and put them into operation. 60 data loggers of the blue’Log X series help to ensure trouble-free operation and standards-compliant electricity feed-in. BayWa r.e. built the turnkey facilities with a total power capacity of around 130 MWp within six months. The company then worked with meteocontrol to connect them to the grid on schedule in March 2016.
meteocontrol provided the monitoring systems for the solar parks in Southern England and Wales as a turnkey solution. Based on comprehensive planning, each PV system was equipped with the necessary measuring technology in stations as well as pre-wired and fully assembled metrological control cabinets. meteocontrol installed a total of 60 data loggers from the innovative blue’Log X series. 30 meteocontrol stations are in place at the 30 MWp Rose & Crown free field system in Wisbech alone. Working on site, the PV specialists from Augsburg then put the monitoring systems into operation and thus ensured that the PV facilities were commissioned according to schedule.
"Finishing the solar parks on time allows us to gain accreditation for the ROC 1.3 program in Great Britain and once again demonstrates our competence as a quality-oriented project developer and general contractor," said Matthias Taft, Energy Director at BayWa AG and Managing Director of BayWa r.e. "With meteocontrol as a dependable partner, the monitoring systems were installed and commissioned quickly and efficiently." BayWa r.e. has taken on operation management for the six PV plants itself and thus oversees wind and solar parks producing around 440 MW in the UK.
For project developers, system operators and EPC companies, meteocontrol provides tailor-made monitoring solutions and a complete service from planning to commissioning. "This ensures cost-effectiveness and short project runtimes. In the end, our customers get everything from a single source," explained Martin Schneider, Managing Director of meteocontrol. "However, the quality of our turnkey solution is even more important. The components are optimally matched to each other and ensure trouble-free operation and maximum yields in the long term. BayWa r.e. places highest demands on system components and system integration. We’re therefore delighted that meteocontrol was enlisted for these system projects in Great Britain," said Martin Schneider.
