DNV GL launches free storage standards resource

DNV GL is attempting to facilitate the adoption of battery storage through its GRIDSTOR project. The project has resulted in the publication of its 102-page GRIDSTOR Recommended Practice guide today, which combines standards and guidelines pertaining to storage and has made it available for free online. DNV GL says it has combined the standards with “credible industry experience and insights” as a part of the GRIDSTOR project.

“At DNV GL we believe that actions such as the Recommended Practice supports the entire industry and global community by offering a single standalone, all-encompassing guideline,” said Jillis Raadschelders, Head of Department Renewables & Storage, DNV GL, in a statement. “By bringing together the most important and relevant standards and guidelines and combining them into one document, DNV GL and its consortium has managed to fill a gap in the industry to help our customers and partners maximize their possibilities, exceed their expectations and reach their regional goals for energy storage.”

By going beyond pure standards, DNV GL hopes the GRIDSTOR Recommended Practice resource will promote “clarity and understanding between stakeholders,” particularly at a time in which storage deployment is picking up sharply. Because of rapid adoption of storage, DNV GL reports that there is an “absence of guidelines” in some markets and pertaining to some areas of storage on a system and component level.

A number of storage technologies have been addressed in the project.

“With energy storage being so important for the transition to more renewables, the GRIDSTOR initiative is timely for the support of solid investment decisions in the development, deployment and operation of energy storage assets,” said Stephen Tordoff from Energy Canvas, a GRIDSTOR participant.

Joulz also participated in the project and the company’s Nadina Baghina added that there are limited shared practices in the storage space. “This project was a great opportunity to learn from each other’s experiences and expertise. It resulted in a wonderful collaboration between various parties with different views on energy storage,” said Baghina.

The GRIDSTOR Joint Industry Project was launched eight months ago.
