JA Solar supplies VW's largest solar installation

The 33-acre, 9.5 MW Volkswagen Chattanooga Solar Park will generate 13 GWh per year at the Chattanooga site which will be sold to the car manufacturer by solar park owners Silicon Ranch Corporation under a 20-year PPA.

The installation, the largest at a carmaking plant in the U.S. and Volkswagen's largest worldwide, will have its output entirely consumed by the plant, providing 12.5% of the factory's energy requirements during full production phases and all of its needs during non-production periods.

Phoenix Solar Inc, the U.S. subsidiary of Phoenix Solar AG, provided EPC for the plant during a six-month period.

Phoenix Solar Inc and Silicon Ranch signed a strategic agreement in 2011 to develop solar plants in the south eastern United States.

Volkswagen's Chattanooga 1.9 million sq. ft. plant employs 3,000 workers building the VW Passat model and is already the only carmaking facility to have been given the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Platinum award.
