SMA to supply 616 MW of inverters to India’s Greenko Energies

Germany’s SMA Solar has signed a lucrative supply deal with Indian solar power developer Greenko Energies Pvt Ltd for the shipment of 616 MW of its Sunny Central 1000CP XT central inverter.

The German firm has already shipped more than 1 GW of inverters into India since its market entry in 2010, and is evidently eyeing the growing opportunities at large scale that exist in the country.

Greenko will install the inverters at power plants in the Indian states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh over the next 12 months, SMA confirmed.

The SMA Sunny Central 1000CP XT inverter was developed with high-growth markets such as India in mind, read a statement from the company. India’s relatively harsh climate and increasing price pressures make the inverter a good fit for the market, said SMA’s executive VP for the utility business unit Boris Wolff.

"With its outdoor rating, OptiCool technology, extensive earthquake and wind speed tests as well as its higher power density in the market, the Sunny Central 1000CP XT inverter clearly focuses on reducing Balance of Systems components, maintenance and logistical costs for any solar power plant project," said Wolff.

Greenko Energies has been very active in the Indian renewable sector in recent months, most notably wrapping up the purchase of SunEdison’s 587 MW portfolio of wind and solar projects in the country in November.
