The University of Applied Sciences Rosenheim and Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences came in second and third respectively, whilst the Fachochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin was announced as the winner of the Solar Systems Award for its Living Equia house.

The University of Applied Sciences Rosenheim was the winner of the Electrical Energy Balance Contest with their solar house Ikaros. In this contest, the electricity self-sufficiency and the solar energy consumption efficiency of the houses was evaluated. The university also received the Award for Appliances and Functioning.

In total, 17 student teams hailing from Europe, the U.S. and China competed in the competition, which saw each team develop plus energy houses at the Villa Solar in Rio Manzanares, Madrid, Spain: over 190,000 visitors attended. The competition lasted for ten days and the different teams competed against one another in ten disciplines. After the houses were completed, they were then examined for their efficiency and how well solar power had been integrated into the structures.

The public’s favorite houses were the Fablab House from the Instituto de Arquitectura Avanzada de Cataluña and the SML House from the Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera. The web’s favorite was Re:focus from the University of Florida.
