US universities adopt solar

The database, which was assembled by the Association of the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), illustrates a major trend within higher education in the U.S. and a major emerging market for photovoltaics also.

AASHE has shown that 137 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity has been installed on American campuses, a market worth over USD$300 million. In 2010 higher education installations made up 5.4 percent of total installed capacity and that the median project size has grown six fold over the three-year period.

The goal of the ASSHE is to drive further photovoltaic installations in the higher education sector, by illustrating examples of successful programs within universities.

The University of San Diego is one such example that accessed federal and state funding to install 5,000 panels equaling 15 percent of the campus’ electricity. Little capital investment was required on behalf of the university.

ASSHE worked with AMSOLAR on the database. AMSOLAR is a San Diego-based developer of solar projects for universities.
