Enormous potential

Portugal’s PV tenders have generated headlines on the back of world-record tariffs. But the country has failed to add meaningful capacity and is now struggling to establish a workable licensing system. Merchant solar shows enormous potential to drive the market, but will politicians listen?

Issue 05 – 2022

The 219 MW Riccardo Totta PV Plant in Portugal’s Algarve region was completed in October 2021. It is the country’s largest such installation, and among the biggest unsubsidized projects built in Europe to date. Developers WElink and China Triumph International Engineering signed a long-term power purchase agreement with Spanish company Audax for energy at the site.
