Arizona's Mesquite Solar complex goes online

The 150 MW first phase of Sempra Generation’s Mesquite Solar 1 project in Arizona has gone online to supply enough solar energy to power around 30,000 homes.

MENA markets to exceed 3GW annually by 2015

GTM Research’s new report “Middle East and North Africa Solar Market Outlook, 2013-2017” forecasts that the annual solar market in MENA countries will reach nearly 3.5 GW by 2015. This will encompass 8% of total global demand in 2015. The report was supported by the Emirates Solar Industry Association.

Thin film producer First Solar has announced the acquisition of Santiago-based solar development company Solar Chile.

VC funding down 50% in 2012

Mercom Capital has reported that global venture capital investments, in the cleantech sector, in 2012 plunged nearly 50% to US$992 million in 103 deals. US$1.9 billion was raised in 2011. The report also states that 35 solar companies filed for insolvency or bankruptcy protection in 2012.

Solar Frontier achieves CIGS "cells" at 19.7%

Japanese thin film manufacturer Solar Frontier has claimed a cadmium free CIGS efficiency record, on tiny “cells” measuring 0.5cm x 0.5cm. The efficiency of 19.7%was measured by Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, and is an improvement on the previous record of 18.6%, which had stood for a decade.

Polysilicon industry to resume growth in 2013

Bernreuter Research sees rising demand with new PV installations of 36 GW. According to the latest Bernreuter Research analysis the global polysilicon industry will resume growth and increase production by 6.5% in 2013.

2013 China PV demand to amount US$3 billion

NPD Solarbuzz has stated in its China Balance of Systems Market Report that revenues of CNY 19.5 billion (US$3.1 billion) will be made available to PV balance-of-system suppliers in the Chinese market this year.

LDK Solar regains compliance with New York Stock Exchange

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has sent a notice to LDK Solar stating that the company is in compliance with NYSE’s continued listing requirement of a minimum average closing price of US$1 per share over a consecutive 30-trading day period.

The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Limited (TANGEDCO) has received a total of 92 applications for 104 projects totaling 499 MW after bids opened last week. The target has been set at 1000MW of solar projects for this year.
