K2 Solar, Inc. successfully completed the design and installation of a 420 kW DC solar photovoltaic (PV) system for the Social Security Administration (SSA) in Richmond, CA.
The PV system consists of five solar carports in the main parking lot adjacent to the Frank Hagel Federal Building and includes four (4) electric vehicle charging stations. The system will produce over 560,000 kWh annually, will provide approximately 15 percent of the peak energy demand of the building, and will save the SSA over $86K per year in energy costs.
K2 Solar was the sole subcontractor for Milcon Construction LLC based in San Antonio, TX for this project. The SSA is taking a large step in reducing its environmental footprint and in realizing long-term cost savings, said Stephen Tsu, President & CEO, K2 Solar, Inc.
The system not only provides shade for the employee parking area with preferential spots for clean energy vehicles, but also utilizes components manufactured in the US which was a requirement of the project. The solar PV system utilized Motech IM60 240W solar modules manufactured in Delaware, a Satcon 375kW inverter, a DECK energy monitoring system, and Coulomb Technology ChargePoint EV Charging Stations.
The SSA is committed to long-term cost savings, energy efficiency and the environment, and this project brings this to light said David Rouggly, the Energy Manager for the facility.

A grand opening ceremony was held in the parking lot on November 18, 2011 after PG&E approved the solar system installation and when the system was officially turned-on.
