Sizing fuses to protect BESS power circuit from overcurrents

Electrical overcurrents can not only damage systems, but also cause costly downtime. Fuses are said to be a great way to protect a battery energy storage system (BESS) simply and cost-effectively. In this pv magazine Webinar, we will learn which fuse coordination approach to take in different circumstances as well as how to properly size fuses within the system for the effective protection of BESS power circuit.

As the global BESS fleet continues to grow at a rapid pace, so does the need to improve reliability and system efficiencies. Comprehensive circuit protection is one way to improve safety and can help avoid costly service interruptions and downtime, protect workers who install and maintain the BESS, and prevent equipment damage.

Designed to serve as overcurrent protection, fuses are instrumental circuit protection devices. However, there is a variety of fuse coordination and sizing approaches that can be taken based on different circumstances and parameters.

In this pv magazine Webinar, we will learn how to size fuses at different levels of the system to protect against low-resistance short circuits. We will hear how to determine the right coordination approaches and size fuses at the battery module level, as well as battery rack, DC panel, and power conversion system.
