Azure Power commissions its third solar plant in India

Azure Power commissioned its third solar power plant in less than two years in Rajasthan today. This is apparently the first 5 MW plant under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM).

The five megawatt (MW) plant will be located in Kathauti village. Azure Power has taken a relatively short time of eleven months to commission the plant, starting with signing the PPA to development.

The five MW plant is set up under the Phase I Batch I of the JNNSM and will supply power to the Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd. Not only generating electricity, the plant has also generated income for the community. The project which spans across 40 acres (approximately 0.16 square kilometers) has employed locals and aided in boosting the local economy. Azure Power also plans to conduct community awareness programs to educate villagers about PV technology.

Azure Power has in its hands 40 MW of alloted solar power capacity under the JNNSM's total allocation of 500 MW. The Azure Power project in Gujarat was the first MW scale solar power project under the Gujarat State Policy using non-recourse financing. CEO Inderpreet Wadhwa says, "With the commissioning of our third grid connected plant, we have now demonstrated our strong engineering and construction capabilities in three different states in India. With the recent allocation of National solar mission projects, we have also shown our long-term commitment in driving down the prices of solar power in India, in line with the ambitions of the National Solar Mission".
