Production at PV manufacturer Motech Industries, Inc., was initially affected by water and power supply outages following the earthquake, according to EnergyTrend, the solar energy division of market research group TrendForce.
Certain production lines suspended production while others are already back online. The company is still evaluating the actual impact. The earthquake also damaged c-Si wafers that were under production when the temblor hit. As a result, it will take a longer time for renewing crystallization and quality checks, EnergyTrend added.
Solar cell maker E-Ton Solar Tech Co., Ltd., also located in Tainan, suffered some damage to its production lines, although the quake did not cause severe damage to the plant. The company expects to restart production soon.
At least 38 people died in the earthquake following the collapse of a 17-storey apartment building in Tainan, according to the BBC. The British broadcaster cited reports by officials late Sunday that 310 people had been rescued from the rubble of the building, with 100 of them taken to hospital. More than 100 people remain buried in the ruins.
