Japan: Sky Solar to begin construction of PV power stations

Shanghai-based Sky Solar has announced it will develop several large-scale solar power plants via its subsidiary Sky Solar Japan, in order to take advantage of the new feed-in tariffs in the country.

The projects are sited at Mihomura-Ibarakiken and Uto-Kumamoto on Japan’s third largest island of Kyushu, located in the south of the country.

The projects will be sited at Mihomura-Ibarakiken and Uto-Kumamoto, on Japan’s third largest island of Kyushu, located in the south of the country. The Uto-Kumamoto development is planned to be nearly two MW in size, and will comprise over 8,000 modules and cover 25,000 square meters. The annual capacity is expected to be 1,950 GWh. The project's EPC partner will be finalized at the end of this month, according to Sky Solar. The electricity produced will be sold to the Kyushu Electric Power Company.

Meanwhile, the Mihomura-Ibarakiken power plant is scheduled to have a capacity of two MW and will be developed on leased private land. Construction is scheduled to begin next month, and the plant should be grid connected by end of December.

Overall, Sky Solar plans to construct photovoltaic power plants in up to 20 areas in Japan, in order to take advantage of the newly-introduced Japanese FIT. Sky Solar Group has said it will invest ¥600 million (US$7.67 million) in each project. Each plant is planned to be two MW and the EPC contracts will be determined through public tenders. The company says site selections and associated works have been completed and applications for grid connection submitted.
