Spains Gamesa one of the largest providers of wind turbines in the world has announced plans to develop up to 100 MW of solar PV capacity in India as the company eyes what it calls "promising" opportunities in the region.
In unveiling its third quarter results, the company confirmed that it had already received orders for 10 MW of solar PV capacity in India. That figure could "quickly rise" to 100 MW by the end of the year, said Gamesa chairman Ignacio Martin.
"The cost of solar is falling quickly and we believe it could be an interesting market for Gamesa," Martin told Reuters. "We prefer to start with solar in India. After that we will decide whether we move to other geographies."
Gamesas first solar commission in India was announced last week a 9 MW turnkey project located in the state of Tamil Nadu. The project was Gamesas first in solar since it exited the industry in 2004.
The chairman confirmed that Gamesas initial foray into the solar industry will be in project development rather than solar panel manufacturing, but he did suggest that Gamesas expertise could well be turned towards the solar inverter market.
Gamesa is also planning to launch a series of wind and solar-backed off-grid power generation systems in India next year to help reduce many rural communities reliance on diesel generators.
"We want to deploy this technology in different geographies, starting in India,"Martin confirmed.
