The US utility Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) has received authorization from regulators to buy electricity from a 100 MW photovoltaic plant of SunPower Corp.

The Henrietta plant will start producing power in late 2016.

The PPA is for 20 years and was signed last September. The Henrietta Solar project will be located in King’s County, in central California and is scheduled to start construction in 2015.

The plant will start producing power in late 2016. PG&E estimates that the photovoltaic plant will provide power to around 36,000 homes. No information on prices was revealed.

The contract will help PG&E comply with a state law that requires utilities to obtain a quarter of their energy from renewable sources by 2016 and a third by 2020, according to Bloomberg.

Meanwhile, SunPower announced the completion of a 1 MW photovoltaic plant at Arizona State University’s Polytechnic campus in Mesa, Arizona. The facility is the first commercial deployment of the company’s C7 Tracker technology, a photovoltaic tracking system that concentrates the sun’s power seven times and can deliver the lowest levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for utility-scale solar power plants, according to a company statement.

The C7 Tracker combines single-axis tracking technology with rows of parabolic mirrors, reflecting light onto 22.8% efficient SunPower Maxeo solar cells. Using mirrors to reduce the number of solar cells required to generate electricity lowers the LCOE by up to 20%, says the company.
