The ISEI was inaugurated today by the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Uzbekistan, Rustam Azimov, and Asian Development Bank (ADB) president, Haruhiko Kuroda. The aim is to develop it into an internationally-recognized place for providing solar education, training and technology.

In a statement released by ADB, it said, "Its applied research will bring innovation, promote technology transfer and spur efficient and economic solar technology use."

Kuroda went on to state, "Harnessing solar energy to fuel development is no longer simply an option – it is a necessity. ADB supports Uzbekistan’s commitment to building expertise, research, innovation and manufacturing capacity, and to making cost-effective investments in clean energy infrastructure, technologies and practices."

The statement added that ABD intends to help deploy three gigawatts worth of solar capacity in developing Asian countries by 2013.
