Spanish power and gas supplier, Naturgy has begun work on the Picón I and Picón II solar power projects in Porzuna, near Ciudad Real, in Spain’s southern region of Castile-La Mancha.
The two projects, the company said in a statement today, have a capacity of 50 MW each and will make use of around 151,452 modules, respectively. The overall investment in the two plants amounts to €100 million. “Construction work is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2019,” said Naturgy.
The two Picón projects, together with the Picón III project located in the same area, are part of the 250 MW PV project pipeline that Naturgy secured in the wind and solar power auction held by the Spanish auction in July, when the group’s name was still Gas Natural Fenosa.
The company’s pipeline also includes the 50 MW Carpio de Tajo solar project near Toledo and the 49 MW Planta solar fotovoltaica La Nava being planned in the municipality of Almodóvar del Campo. The construction of these two facilities started in late May and in April, respectively. All of the five projects have a capacity of 50 MW, as projects that do not exceed this size do not need to obtain approval from Spanish central authorities.
According to its statement, Naturry has currently 979 MW of wind power capacity under operation, 110 MW of mini-hydro, and 58 MW of co-generation and PV.
In June, Gas Natural Fenosa changed its name to Naturgy Energy Group, S.A. to reflect its new strategic plan envisaging a stronger commitment towards clean energy sources, among other things.
Another big energy company operating in Spain’s solar market, Enel’s unit Enel Green Power, announced two weeks ago that it also started construction on a solar project awarded in Spain’s July auction, an 84.7 MW solar plant located near the town of Totana, in the Murcia region. In the competition, Enel Green Power was able to secure a 338.6 MW PV project pipeline.
