The Japanese Ministry for Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has announced that the total combined renewable energy capacity between April 2012 and January 2013 has reached 1,394 MW. Photovoltaic capacity alone accounted for 1,392 MW.

Spanish photovoltaic module manufacturer T-Solar has started proceedings to lay off 170 employees, according to local media. The company has been involved in voluntary insolvency proceedings for over a month.

China: Hefei government takes over LDK Solar subsidiary
An affiliate of the Hefei City government in China has agreed to purchase LDK Solar subsidiary, LDK Solar High-Tech (Hefei) Co., Ltd for around RMB 120 million (US$19.4 million, 14.7 million). Originally the subsidiary was to be sold to the Shanghai Qianjiang Group. LDK expects to occur a loss of $80 million to $90 million.
EU votes against carbon market rescue fix
The EU Parliament yesterday narrowly voted against a rescue plan created to help the debilitated carbon market, thus putting the emissions trading scheme it created in 2005 in order to help combat climate change, at risk.
IEA: Solar a leader, but clean energy progress has "stalled"

Saudi Arabia: 50 monitoring stations planned for solar
Saudi Arabia has turned to the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for training and expertise. Together with NREL and its partner Battelle, more than 50 monitoring station to gauge and predict solar radiation will be installed in the kingdom.
2012 global clean energy investments decline, as capacity grows
Despite an 11% decline in global clean energy investments in 2012, the industry showed resilience by adding 88 GW of generating capacity, according to a report released by U.S.-based The Pew Charitable Trusts.
