Meyer Burger to end manufacturing in Switzerland
Equipment manufacturer Meyer Burger plans to end production at its headquarters site in Thun, Switzerland, as part of an updated cost efficiency program. All production activities in Thun will be discontinued by the end of 2018, though the site will continue to serve as Meyer Burger’s headquarters.

Chile: Lowest bid in electric auction reaches $21.48/MWh
The bid was submitted by Enel Generación Chile, a subsidiary of Italian energy giant Enel. The second lowest bid was presented by GPG Solar Chile, a unit of Spanish company Gas Natural Fenosa. At the auction, 2,200 GWh will be allocated, successful bids will be publicly announced on November 3rd.

Fossilized Diatoms, an algae that has the ability to manipulate light, are being used to solve a design problem that has long plagued the proliferation of organic solar cells. The diatoms can be found in all waters and in the bark of trees. They possess a skeleton made of nanostructured silica or glass.
Germany added 117 MW of new solar in September
Figures from Germany’s Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) show that 117.185 MW of PV projects was added in September. Of this new capacity, around 11.38 MW was ground-mounted projects, and 238.4 kW was part of the country’s tenant electricity (Mieterstrom) scheme.
