Panels being covered in volcanic ash can cause several problems – as has been seen recently with ongoing eruption in the Canary Islands. The weight of the ash may be too much for the structure to bear, sharp ash particles or small stones within the ash can scratch module glass, and acids or sulfur compounds contained in the ash can cause corrosion on the backsheet.
The Solcan scheme had a budget of €20 million. Most of the assigned PV capacity will be located in the islands of Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.
The government of the Spanish archipelago, which also announced a 300 MW wind power auction for this year, aims to cover 45% of its energy needs with renewables by 2025.
Including this operation, the installed PV capacity of the power and gas distributor in the archipelago has reached 20 MW.
Projects include a solar park and several installations of hundreds of kilowatts, all of which located in the island of Gran Canaria.
The government of the Spanish archipelago is planning to define the bidding rules for its own renewable energy auction by the end of July.
