Germany will need 160 GW of solar by 2030 to prevent power shortages

EuPD Research has calculated what needs to be done to replace the nuclear and coal generation to be phased out in Germany. Accelerated expansion of PV appears the best short-term option. However, storage capacity will need to increase 30-fold by 2040 so solar can become the main pillar of the country’s energy system.

Germany added 292 MW of solar in July

Demand for systems with a generation capacity of up to 750 kW is driving the market. The 52 GW capacity cap for solar under the national FIT scheme is approaching. In September, feed-in tariffs and market premiums will fall a further 1.4%.

Germany installed 2 GW of solar in six months

After a strong start to the year, demand for PV systems has slowed because of FIT reductions. Solar subsidies will fall by a further 1.4% per month until November.

Average final price in Germany’s solar tenders falls to €0.0547/kWh

In a highly oversubscribed tender Germany’s Federal Network Agency allocated 204 MW of solar capacity. The lowest bid was €0.049/kWh and a large project was assigned in the northern region of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Baywa re to build its first unsubsidized solar plant in Germany

The 8.8 MW project, in Mecklenburg-Pomerania, will sell power to industrial customers through a long-term PPA. Construction is expected to begin in June.

French-German battery alliance secures €5 billion as Tesvolt works on gigafactory

Ministers have reaffirmed plans for a Franco-German battery industry. The project is being supported in principle by the European Commission, which could give its approval by October. Meanwhile, German storage specialist Tesvolt is building a commercial storage system factory in Germany.

Germany added 350 MW of new solar capacity in March

The strong growth registered in the first quarter of the year – when 1.27 GW of new PV was deployed – will prompt a 1.4% reduction in the FIT price for the three-month period up to July.

Solar, wind covered most of Germany’s power demand on Easter Monday

Renewable energy delivered 56 GW of capacity at noon on Easter Monday, with consumption coming in around 61 GW. The price on the power exchange fell to minus €83.01/MWh during peak hours.

Solar once again the only winner in German renewables auctions

In the first round of this year’s mixed wind and solar tender there were only bids for PV projects. Some 18 projects with a combined capacity of 210 MW were selected and the final feed-in premium tariffs were almost the same as those seen in the previous round, with the average price slightly higher.
