Madagascar has tendered a 200 MW solar project near Antananarivo and a 10 MW facility on its north coast.
Axian has secured MGA 47.1 billion ($10.9 million) to finance a 40 MW solar plant and a 5 MWh storage facility in Madagascar. The installation is the island state’s largest solar park.
The project consists of an 8 M W solar PV plant that is scheduled to be operational in 2022 and a 12 MW wind farm that will be commissioned in 2023. Both facilities will be connected to an 8.25 MW battery and will cover 60% of the annual electricity consumption of the Fort-Dauphin mine, located in the south of the island.
Each unit contains 200 pre-assembled and pre-wired photovoltaic panels and can be deployed in 30 minutes.
The Malagasy government has announced three PV projects, each with a 5 MW generation capacity, will be built this year. The nation’s cumulative installed solar capacity was only 33 MW at the end of last year.
The 20 MW facility will sell power to Madagascar’s state-owned utility, Jirama under a long-term PPA. Construction on the plant started in late 2016.
A solar facility made up of 720 solar PV modules and coupled with a 315 Kwh storage system is expected to power several communities of the Bongolava region.
The 25 MW (AC) solar PV project will be located near the capital of Antananarivo and will be supported by the World Bank’s Scaling Solar group program.
The new measure was announced by Madagascar’s President, Hery Rajaonarimampianina on the occasion of the inauguration of a commercial PV system installed at a shopping mall in Ankorondrano.
Madagascar’s Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons is increasing efforts to implement its rural electrification plan for 2015-2020. Meanwhile, the government is also seeking developers for the island’s first MW-sized grid-connected PV projects.
