The Chinese PV manufacturer has unveiled ambitious plans to build a vertically integrated factory in China’s Inner Mongolia region, which will be powered by a mix of solar and wind coupled with on-site energy storage.

The past 12 months have proved profitable for polysilicon manufacturers, as selling prices have soared to levels not seen since 2011. However, with major new capacity expansions on the horizon from most of the leading manufacturers, and new players planning to enter the scene, the market balance looks set to shift. Finnish lender Nordea has called in a NOK150 million indemnity loan thought to have been taken out by REC Silicon ASA as a result of the bankruptcy of its Norwegian wafer manufacturing arm seven years ago.

The polysilicon maker has turned a quick $160 million profit from the sale of its stake in a fund it paid $189 million to establish just five months ago. The heavily indebted manufacturer needs to raise funds to pay for its production capacity expenditure.

Stock in the polysilicon manufacturer appeared to be recovering in early trading on the Oslo exchange this morning after it cancelled plans for a private placement of as many as 50 million shares.

Daqo New Energy Corp. has announced plans to stop its wafer manufacturing operations this month. It instead intends to focus solely on polysilicon production. Challenging market conditions were cited as the reason.
