Saudi energy and desalination plant developer ACWA Power and Spanish engineering firm TSK have won the world's largest single-phase solar plant tender.
The winning bidders have been awarded the contract to develop the 200 MW second phase of the planned 1 GW Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, in Dubai.
The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced the news today (Monday) as the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) opened in the desert city.
The 200 MW second phase is set to be complete by April 2017 and the Gulf Business website is reporting the winning bidders will receive a levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of $0.0584/kWh under the terms of a 25-year PPA.
The first, 13 MW, phase of the solar park has already been connected and it is hoped the 40 km2 development will have a 1 GW capacity by 2030.
The Power Technology website quoted Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of DEWA as stating 1 per cent of the emirate's energy will come from solar by 2020, rising to 5 per cent by 2030, in line with the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy drawn up by Dubai's Supreme Council of Energy.
