Last Thursday a subsidiary of Frances Sonnedix and Yarotek held a groundbreaking ceremony for what will be the largest solar PV plant in the Caribbean when completed. The companies expect the 45 MW-AC solar project in the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico to be connected to the grid in August.
The Oriana solar plant will be located in Isabela, Puerto Rico, and will represent an investment of US$160 million dollars. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by officials including the governor of Puerto Rico.
Different actors have given different accounts of the expected generation. While a press statement by the government of Puerto Rico estimates that the project will generate 100 gigawatt-hours (GWh) annually, Sonnedix puts this number at over 125 GWh.
Greeces METKA-EGN will build, commission and operate the project.
The largest PV projects in the Caribbean are also in Puerto Rico. One of these, the 24 MW Ilumina PV project, is in the municipality of Guayama.
