SunPower introduces 24 percent Maxeon Solar Cell

U.S. cell and module manufacturer SunPower Corp. has announced that its 160 mm, 24 percent Maxeon solar cell is now in commercial production.

SunPower also claims its new Maxeon cells look better than many rivals' products.

SunPower claims that the "all-back contact" cell produces more energy per square meter and features a better temperature coefficient that conventional crystalline cells. The company also claims that the cells operate better in shady and dusty conditions.

The Maxeon cells are already being integrated into some SunPower solar modules. The panels, claims SunPower, can deliver efficiencies in excess of 20 percent. The modules will include up to 128 cells per panel and be available this year.

In a release announcing the new cells, Tom Werner, SunPower President and CEO said: "With the new Maxeon solar cells, offering efficiencies of up to 24 percent, SunPower continues to lead the industry in technology innovation, delivering to its customers the highest efficiency, most reliable solar panels for guaranteed performance."
