OPV cell achieves record 8.3 percent efficiency


Konarka Technologies Inc., which develops and commercializes Konarka Power Plastic, has announced that this is the highest performance recorded by NREL for an OPV cell. The lab tested a large area single-junction solar cell with a surface area of one square centimeter.

"The progress Konarka has achieved this year with regard to solar cell efficiency is unprecedented, representing a significant milestone for the industry," commented Howard Berke, chairman, CEO and co-founder of Konarka. "This unsurpassed NREL certification opens new doors for the commercial production of cost-effective, efficient electricity for numerous large scale applications."

According to the company, the material it uses for its cell is lightweight and flexible, thus lending itself to a wide range of applications where traditional PV are not effective.

Previous record

Back in July, Solarmer Energy, Inc. achieved an efficiency of 8.13 percent for its OPV cell, which was also certified by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
