Located in Boulder City, near Las Vegas, it is said to be the biggest installation of its kind in the country. Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, Boulder City Mayor Roger Tobler, Jeff Martin, president and chief executive officer of Sempra Generation, and other dignitaries were on hand to officially dedicate it.
Sempra is now planning to expand the Copper Mountain Solar complex by 200 MW, "because of the benefits alternative energy projects bring to the state and local economy". The move was recently approved by Boulder City.
In a statement it was said that Governor Sandoval praised Sempra Generation for its commitment to Nevada and for creating hundreds of local construction jobs to build the solar facility. He is also said to have expressed "strong support" for the company's expansion plan.
"This project exemplifies my goal of making Nevada the renewable energy capital of the country. Projects of this magnitude provide hundreds of jobs and invest millions of dollars in our state," he said.
Construction on Copper Mountain Solar began last January at the 380-acre desert site. Nearly 775,000 thin film PV panels were installed. The facility is now generating enough electricity to power about 14,000 average homes. The power has been sold to Pacific Gas & Electric.
