Sungrow-Samsung SDI introduced new energy storage systems at Solar Power International 2016

Sungrow-Samsung SDI, a world-class energy storage system supplier, has released new energy storage system solutions at Solar Power International 2016, the largest solar tradeshow in the North America (Las Vegas, NV; Booth #2059).
The system solution integrates, energy storage inverters and Li-ion batteries and is designed to address system integration problems, especially in the North America market and is based on Sungrow-Samsung SDI’ cutting-edge technologies. This integrated system solution is applicable to commercial energy storage, energy storage power systems and the micro grid.
Notably, Sungrow-Samsung SDI showcased its 250kW/500kWh energy storage system which is especially designed for commercial energy storage. It perfectly combines Li-ion batteries and energy storage inverters, effectively solving a number of problems including communication, battery pack design, battery protection and equipment layout thanks to its high system efficiency and compact design. The SC250KU inverter employed in this energy storage system, is best characterized by its high power density, high efficiency and wide voltage range, as well as the virtual synchronous generator. Furthermore, the Li-ion batteries deployed in the 250kW/500kWh system can charge and discharge up to 6,000 times with multiple protection functions and high power density. The Li-ion batteries also have international certifications such as UN38, VDE, CE, UL and JET, and are capable of being used in various applications.
During SPI, Sungrow-Samsung SDI won the contract to supply energy storage systems to a 5MW/20MWh project located in the south of California. “Energy storage is expected to be promising and play a pivotal role in boosting sustainable development of global renewable industry. Sungrow-Samsung SDI is always committed to technical innovation. We believe that the new products and solutions can better meet demands of the North America.” said Jiamao Wu, general manager of Sungrow-Samsung SDI.

Crystal Solar Receives $3 Million Energy Department Grant to Develop High Efficiency Solar Cells Using Epitaxially Grown Kerfless Wafers

Crystal Solar, a pioneer in the direct growth of mono-crystalline Silicon epitaxial wafers for solar today announced that it has been awarded a $3 million cooperative agreement by the U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative to develop high efficiency epitaxial solar cells and demonstrate commercial level yield at its pilot production facility in Santa Clara, California.
Crystal Solar’s breakthrough manufacturing technology called Direct Gas to Wafer™ enables direct conversion of Trichlorosilane (TCS) gas to mono crystalline silicon wafers by high throughput epitaxial growth. By skipping the polysilicon, ingoting and the wire-sawing steps altogether, this approach not only results in lowest cost/watt for the wafers but also significantly reduces the capital required to set up a manufacturing plant. Furthermore, this process enables the growth of high quality p-n junctions in-situ which reduces cell making steps while increasing the efficiency.
"Crystal Solar’s epitaxial process has already demonstrated world record efficiencies for mono crystalline passivated emitter and rear contact cells (PERC), representing for the first time a kerfless wafer technology exceeding the performance of the incumbent," said T.S. Ravi, chief executive officer of Crystal Solar. "We appreciate this recognition and grant from the Energy Department and we expect that this will greatly help accelerate the transition to market for such wafers."
