In what it describes as an "historic milestone," Chinese module suppliers Yingli has announced that is has shipped 13 GW of modules. In a statement announcing the milestone, Yingli states that its deployed PV fleet can now produce 16 billion kWh of electricity each year, almost enough to a supply the residential population of a city the size of Beijing.
"We are incredibly proud of reaching this historic milestone, which is a testament to both our innovative, high quality solar products and to our dedicated pursuit of Yingli's mission to bring green energy to all," said Liansheng Miao, Chairman and CEO of Yingli Green Energy in a statement.
Yinglis achievement comes at a time when discussions amongst solar industry participants regarding the weight of the companys debt burden are becoming increasingly common. In what may be an ominous sign, Yingli sought and was granted a 15-day extension in delivering its 2014 financial results late last month. The company will report on May 15.
Yingli has also slipped from the number one module supplier spot, a position it reached in 2012 and had held until 2014. While ambitious manufacturing expansion plans have been announced by rivals such Trina Solar, JA Solar, Canadian Solar and JinkoSolar, recent signs are that Yingli is looking to avoid its debt burden becoming oppressive and is therefore taking a more cautious approach to capacity expansions.
