Switzerland's ABB an industry-leading power and automation technology group announced today that it has won an order to construct a 100 MW solar farm in Canada's most populous province, Ontario.
This first phase of the Grand Renewable Energy Park will cost an estimated CAD$80 million (USD$76.8 million) and is part of a wider CAD$5 billion investment by Samsung Renewable Energy and partners to create and build a leading green cluster of renewable energy plants in Canada, with a combined clean energy generation capacity of 1,369 MW.
ABB and its consortium partner Bondfield Construction were awarded the order from Canadian Solar Solutions, and will be expected to begin work on the project immediately, with a fully operational date given for 2015.
ABB will provide many of its range of power and automation products for the plant, including its flagship automation platform, Symphony Plus. The company will also be responsible for the engineering, commissioning, electrical installation and performance testing of the plant, while Bondfield Construction will handle all civil and mechanical installation works.
Once complete, the PV plant will produce 165,000 MWh of solar electricity enough renewable energy to power an estimated 13,750 Canadian homes and displace some 162,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide.

Ontario has been a shining light in Canada's solar industry. In 2012, figures from the International Energy Agency showed that 267 MW of PV capacity was installed in the province that year alone, which represented a 70% increase on 2011. Since then, ABB alone has been ordered to deliver 90 MW of PV capacity in Ontario, adding to its portfolio of more than 50 turnkey PV power plants worldwide.
