Chinese group BYD Company Ltd.s Brazilian unit is one step closer to realizing its planned PV module manufacturing plant in Campinas, a city in the state of Sao Paulo.?
BYD Energy do Brasil has signed a cooperation agreement with the Campinas labor office for the creation of 300 jobs that will form the initial staff of the companys PV module production facility.
BYD will invest BRL 150 million ($45 million) in the PV fab, which adds to the companys existing electric bus factory in the city. The 200 MW capacity plant is scheduled to begin production in early 2017.
The solar power boom in Brazil has created an ideal scenario for BYD to start producing its solar modules in the country, the company said.
BYD said the country was set to achieve remarkable capacity for renewables generation, with solar power becoming an important addition to the countrys energy matrix. Brazil last year launched a series of renewable power auctions and the first one in 2016 is scheduled to take place in September followed by a second one in December.
By the end of June, While Brazils solar capacity reached just 30 MW from 39 power plants at the end of June, total capacity is expected to grow to 2,734 MW from 134 plants by 2019, BYD said.
Such positive trend has prompted BYD Energy to set up PV module manufacturing in the country, resulting not only in the growth of the companys sustainable development platform in South America, but also in significant job creation and strengthening of a new productive chain in Brazil.
The green tech giant added that in addition to the environmental benefits, the biggest advantages of solar power generation were the speed of power plant construction, minimum environmental impact, low maintenance costs and possibility to locate plants closer to large consumption centers, thus avoiding long transmission lines.
