The ground-mounted plants are located in Cornwall, Lincolnshire and Somerset. They were all completed within a nine to 12 week period. A spokesperson for Lightsource tells pv magazine that the company is just finalizing its photovoltaic project pipeline for the next quarter. While they could not disclose too many details, they did say that Canadian Solar will be involved in some of them.
With regards to the four recently completed plants, two Moor 1 and 2 worth a total of 2.70 MW are located in Spalding, Lincolnshire, across an area of 18 acres and comprise approximately 11,550 Canadian Solar photovoltaic panels. Meanwhile, a 1.93 MW project, Sandhill, has been installed in Taunton, Somerset, across 11 acres. It has been kitted out with around 7,856 panels. Finally, the 1.74 Benbole plant is located in Bodmin, Cornwall, across 10 acres and is comprised of about 7,098 panels.
"With its ease of installation and speed of deployment, solar energy continues to offer benefits to all involved and the Spalding installations, which were built on a Butterfly and Wildlife Park, are a great example of how large scale solar farms can be integrated into the countryside successfully," commented Nicholas Boyle, CEO of Lightsource. He added that there is "great" solar potential in the U.K.
In an interview with pv magazine last December, James Lee, Lightsource managing director said that the company had delivered a total of 13 large scale sites in the U.K. worth around 32 MW. With the newly announced projects, the companys photovoltaic portfolio now sits at around 38 MW. He added that Lightsource has got "hundreds of sites in the pipeline, with new approvals, permits, installations and connections happening almost daily." He went on to discuss the solar investment situation in the U.K.
In 2012 alone, the U.K. solar market has seen over 500 MW installed, bringing total cumulative photovoltaic capacity to over one gigawatt. Many companies like Conergy and Isolux Corsan have joined in on the act, installing large-ground-mounted plants across the country.
