The first product is set to be a testing system for the plating layers of PV solar panels. Global sales of plating layers for PV panels are currently estimated to be USD$2.5 billion. According to most recent figures, the worldwide market for testing equipment was USD$400 million in 2008; of this Orbotech hopes to secure a share.
The company has additionally said it believes sales of PV panels will increase 20-25 percent annually, despite European feed-in tariffs declining.
Orbotechs interest in the PV sector started when it acquired ‘Photon Dynamics'. Later it joined hands in research and development with LT Solar from San Jose, California for testing equipment. Its present market value is USD$380 million.
