Suntech hits five GW milestone

The silicon-module manufacturer has made the announcement as it celebrates its tenth anniversary. Five GW of solar modules is sufficient to offset 3.79 million tons of carbon dioxide per year, an equivalent to planting nine million trees or removing 1.5 million cars from the road.

Zhengrong Shi, Suntech’s Founder and CEO released a statement on announcement of the milestone: "With a focus on achieving retail grid parity in 50 percent of global markets by 2015, we will continue to work with our customers and partners to change the way the world produces and consumes energy."

Suntech now says that it aims to achieve the ten GW milestone in the next two years.

The Chinese company has also just released its first Sustainability Report for 2010 in which its social and environmental goals and achievements are set out.

In this regard achievements for 2010 include the phasing out of two toxic chemicals, a 24 percent reduction in energy consumption, a 17 percent reduction in workplace accidents and a 50 percent reduction in wastewater, per megawatt (MW) of production. As such Suntech was recognized by sustainable investment house Murphy and Spitz with the "Global Leader Award".

Earlier in the week US manufacturer SunPower released its 2010 and first Sustainability report.

Suntech also says that it intends to create executive-level position responsible for reporting on sustainability goals and metrics.
