The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has announced in a press release that Turkey’s first floating PV project, a PV array with a capacity of around 250 kW in the Lake Büyükçekmec, is now completed.
The plant was built by the municipality’s subsidiary Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration (İSKİ) and local energy company Istanbul Energy. The installation relies on 960 polycrystalline modules with a power of 260 W provided by an unnamed manufacturer. Furthermore, two unspecified floating PV technologies were used for the project.
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality stressed that it aims to produce 55% of the power it consumes by 2023, and that two more floating PV projects are currently being planned at the Terkos and Ömerli dams.
“The municipality is targeting to produce its energy as a municipality and to increase sustainability in energy production with renewable energy sources,” said its secretary general Hayri Baraçlı.

“Following the results of the project,” stated another press release by ISKI, “the system will be enlarged and it is planned to be applied to other water resources of Istanbul as well. Therefore, it is aimed to reduce evaporation in water resources in summer months and to provide contribution for energy production of Istanbul.”
ISKI issued a tender for the project in August 2016.
