The Department of Economy, Enterprises and Employment of the Spanish region of Castilla-La Mancha has approved a 50 MW solar project that Spain’s power and gas utility, Gas Natural Fenosa is planning to develop in El Carpio de Tajo, in the province of Toledo.
The project, which was submitted for approval to local authorities in March 2017, is expected to comprise 158,400 solar modules with a power output of 315 W, and 30 central inverters; and will require an investment exceeding €49 million, the local government said.
The plant will also include the installation of 15 transformer stations and the construction of a short transmission line to connect the facility to the local power grid.
In late November, another 50 MW solar project was submitted for approval to local authorities by Photosolar Medina 4. The CFS Alarcos project is planned to be located in the municipality of Corral de Calatrava, near Ciudad Real.

Castilla-La Mancha is the Spanish region with the highest volume of installed PV capacity. At the end of 2016, its installed solar power stood at around 920 MW. The region is particularly suited for large-scale solar projects, due to the large availability of cheap land and high levels of solar irradiation.
The government of the region, however, is also supporting the installation of renewable energy power generators for small and middle-sized enterprises. In mid-December, it launched a tender to allocate around €320,000 in rebates for wind and solar projects. These rebates are expected to cover up to 40% of the costs for buying and installing a PV system, for a maximum rebate of €30,000.
