Panama's Public Services Authority (ASEP) has granted conditional approval for two PV projects with a combined capacity of 29 MW.
Local developer Bajo Frío PV SA is set to build the 19.95 MW Proyecto Solar Bajo Frío in the western province of Chiriquí. Enel Fortuna SA, a local subsidiary of Italian multinational renewable energy corporation Enel Green Power, likewise received approval for its 9 MW Chiriquí plant, located in the same province. Enel has already signed a grid deal with local energy distributor Empresa de Distribución Chiriquí SA for the project.
Chiriquí is Panamas second most developed province after Panama Province.
Enel built Panamas first PV solar plant to go online, a 2.4 MW installation located in the Sarigua National Park that began operation in February. The $10 million project was financed by Enel and the Italian government. The project was seen as Enel's first step in a wider plan to develop solar in Panama and across Central and South America.
In total, Enel has 300 MW of power capacity installed in Panama, which is 23% of the country's total electricity generation capacity.
The latest projects are further evidence of solar PV's further development in Central America. PV developers in neighboring Costa Rica recently got a boost after authorities defined the rate at which PV users can sell excess electricity.
