The Portuguese government has announced a national energy-saving plan for the 2022-23 period. It expects to add 1,140 MW of new solar by the end of this year.
Solar generation accounted for a 8.2% of Portugal’s total electricity production in May – a new record for the country.
The Portuguese government has approved exceptional measures to simplify renewable energy production. The new provisions include the exemption of operating licenses and operating certificates for renewable energy facilities, battery storage, and projects for self-consumption.
EDPR, Finerge, Voltalia and Endesa were among the winners of Portugal’s latest renewables procurement exercise, in which 163 MW of floating PV capacity was allocated.
The country’s cumulative PV capacity reached 1.77 GW at the end of December.
Through the procurement exercise, the Portuguese authorities want to select floating PV projects between 8 to 10 MW in size. Six water reservoirs have already been identified for their deployment.
An investment of around €5 million will allow an old solar panel factory in the Beja district to reopen and create more than 40 new jobs. Galp Energia’s former director of innovation is part of the new team.
