BYD to establish PV module facility in Brazil

Share

The Chinese battery, e-mobility and solar manufacturer signed the agreement on May 19 in front of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Brazilian President Dilma Roussef in Brazil. The 400 MW PV module manufacturing facility will be located in São Paulo and should be operational in the first half of next year. Up to 200 jobs are expected to be created.

BYD is set to manufacture its double glass solar panel at the facility. Speaking to pv magazine in February, Tom Zhao, BYD Company's General Manager of Global Solar Sales said the company is looking to move away from traditional PV modules. Glass-glass modules are becoming increasingly popular, due to their longer lifetimes, longer warranties and claims of reduced BoS costs.

BYD has also said it will install an R&D center for electric vehicles, energy storage, smart grid, solar power and LED lighting. It is further working on an electric bus manufacturing facility, which is set to be opened next July in the state of São Paulo.
