Lobby group the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) has welcomed the call by two committees of the European Parliament for a new renewables commitment, stretching to 2030.
The EPIA is calling for the European Union to commit to a legally binding target of generating 45% of the political bloc's energy from renewables in 16 years' time and estimates 15% of elctrical power generation by that date could come from PV.
The EPIA welcomed a call by the parliamentary committees for industrial research and energy (ITRE) and environment, public health and food safety (ENVI) for a binding 2030 renewables target, to extend the existing 2020 target.
Proposals for the EU's policy framework goals to 2030 are expected on Wednesday, January 22 with a memorandum for resolution due to be submitted to the plenary session of the parliament next month. After that, it is anticipated European heads of state will consider energy issues at the EU summit in March.
EPIA senior communications advisor Benjamin Fontaine told pv magazine the industry body, together with the European Renewable Energy Council (EREC), is calling for binding 2030 targets supported by a ‘properly functioning emissions trading scheme' and continuous efforts to reduce energy consumption.
