In a major move by JA Solar to improve the efficiency and quality of its solar wafer and cell production lines, it has handed out a significant contract to the Swiss technology group that is at the forefront of PERC technology. Scheduled for commissioning in the second half of 2016, the new equipment should help facilitate an expansion of the company’s production volume.

The 18 million Swiss francs (US$18.8 million) contract is for Meyer Burger’s MAiA 2.1 system platform, SiNA cell coating systems and innovative DW288 diamond wire cutting equipment and technology. The equipment will be used for the production of solar wafers for high performance PERC cells. The contract includes the supply, installation and commissioning of the equipment.

The move comes as JA Solar plans to expand its production volume of solar cells, as demand increases for its solar modules. The Meyer Burger equipment will increase the efficiency and quality of the existing wafer and cell production lines of JA Solar.

The total annual output of the new equipment will be approximately 1.5 GW, with its delivery and commissioning expected for the second half of 2016.
