Quality counts: field tests reveal the key to PV performance
Roundtable discussion with participants and invited experts on key questions for investors, EPCs and installers. In the second part of the roundtable, field tests on 190 Installations in North America, Europe & Asia Pacific will be presented, with 45 module manufacturers and more than 450 MW involved.
Where: at Intersolar Europe ICM Conference Center in Munich, room 5 (ground floor)
When: Thursday, June 1, 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm
5th Quality Roundtable event – What are the three major problems in the installation field and how can you avoid it?
Learn the results of our survey of key PV EPCs and investors, what are their major pain points and learn from experts, what they would recommend to solve the calamaties around PID, hot spots etc. In the second part of the event we are very excited to have a look at field tests on 190 Installations in North America, Europe & Asia Pacific, where 45 module manufacturers across more than 450 MW of installations are represented.
Further Highlights: TÜV Rheinland will be unveiling an example of an array where PID caused losses of over $1.5 million in two years, including repair costs, while mitigation would have only cost around $10,000. LID is also an issue, particularly with PERC modules, as statistics show. While about half of the tested modules don’t show evidence of LID, more than 10% degraded more than 1.4 % resulting in annual revenue declines.

4th Quality Roundtable at Solar Power International in Las Vegas
Following the success of the 3rd Quality Roundtable at Intersolar EU, the last Roundtable, co-located at the SPI show in Las Vegas, September 14 2016, examined poor quality cases from the field and determined who’s to blame for the inferior quality: installer, developer, manufacturer or material provider.
The fourth pv magazine Quality Roundtable, the first in the United States, took place last week during the Solar Power International trade show in Las Vegas. The meeting revealed that experts in the U.S. market also regard hot spots as a serious issue. It highlighted that in parts of the U.S. there are projects in which everything that can go wrong, did go wrong.
Another key issue discussed during the Roundtable was how investors can find a trustworthy EPC, particularly in an emerging solar state.
Manufacturing processes and the bill of materials is also a key factor when it comes to ensuring quality. George Touloupas, the Director of Technology and Quality at Clean Energy Associates, a gold sponsor of the event, said that tariff changes, funding deadlines, and the ebbs and flows of the production side of the PV industry can result in practices and quality varying greatly. These differences can occur between manufacturers but even within one company or production site over time!
