Singapore approves 1 GW hydropower import project from Malaysia

Singapore has conditionally approved a 1 GW hydropower import project from Malaysia’s Sarawak state, with first deliveries expected around 2035.

Solar and wind integration crucial as Southeast Asia electricity demand grows

The International Energy Agency’s latest report says solar and wind energy are well placed to meet Southeast Asia’s growing electricity demand. It adds that while additional deployment will create flexibility challenges, most countries in the region can integrate more solar and wind energy without requiring major system changes.

Weathered PV backsheets have 46% faster flame spread than unweathered counterparts

Researchers in Singapore have accelerated the weathering of PV backsheets and investigated their flame spread behavior at different intervals. After 6 weeks, they found that weathered PV backsheets show 46% faster flame spread than unwearthered ones. They have also highlighted that current safety standards fail to account for long-term degradation.

Upcycling solar glass waste to use in solid-state lithium batteries

Nanyang Technological University researchers have milled solar panel glass waste for use in cathodes used in solid state lithium metal batteries. When used as a functional filler in solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) material, the resulting battery performance was maintained over 80 charge cycles with an 8.3 % improvement over the reference device.

SERIS achieves world record efficiency of 26.7% for perovskite-organic tandem solar cell

The tandem device is based on a bottom organic cell that can achieve a remarkable power conversion efficiency of 17.9% and a high short-circuit current density of 28.60 mA cm2. Furthermore, it uses a top perovskite solar cell with an open-circuit voltage of 1.37 V and a fill factor of 85.5%.

Indonesia, Singapore partner on solar supply chain in Riau Islands

Indonesia and Singapore have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a solar manufacturing supply chain in Indonesia’s Riau Islands province, as part of broader plans to enable cross-border clean energy trading.

The Hydrogen Stream: Mitsubishi Power completes hydrogen blending project

Georgia Power and Mitsubishi Power have completed a 50% hydrogen fuel blend trial on an advanced-class gas turbine at Plant McDonough-Atkinson in the US state of Georgia, while Proteus Energy and Symbio France have developed a modular 75 kW hydrogen fuel cell system for hybrid and harbor vessels.

SERIS launches solar asset management spinoff

The Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS) has launched PV Doctor, a startup that provides real-time monitoring and diagnostics to help solar installation owners maintain long-term asset value.

PV module recycling tech based on electrohydraulic shockwave fragmentation

An international research team has developed a new machine that utilizes shockwaves to separate the different materials of a PV module. Chemical processes can be further used to extract silicon and silver. Results show the recovery of more than 99.5% of the original weight of the panels.

Organic-inorganic perovskite cell relying on furan-based polymer achieves 21.39% efficiency

Researchers in Singapore used a biomass-derived polymer to increase the efficiency of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite solar cell. The cell was also found to obtain a 90% efficiency retention after 1,100 hours, which compares to 52% for benchmark cells designed without the proposed polymer.
