The German inverter manufacturer and smart technology specialist SMA is making smart home interconnectivity ever easier. The group’s SMA Smart Home intelligent energy management system will now be able to incorporate home appliances from Bosch-owned manufacturing giant BSH Hausgeräte GmbH (BSH).

Bosch will be presenting the new solution, which uses the Home Connect standard with energy management via EEBus, for the first time at the IFA trade show in Berlin, which runs Sept. 4 – 9.

Owners of PV systems that use the Home Connect app will be able to use their self-generated solar energy more efficiently to operate home appliances from the multi-brand company BSH Hausgeräte, maker of more than a dozen brand lines such as Bosch, Siemens, Thermador, Junker and Balay.

The Sunny Home Manager – the central control unit of the SMA Smart Home – is used to manage appliances according to users’ needs with the help of the Home Connect app, which can be used to specify the time period and program for appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers.

The manager can determine how much power the PV system will produce over the next few hours by analyzing Internet weather forecasts. It also knows the typical consumption patterns of the household, for example that a proportion of the self-generated PV power will always be required for cooking at midday.

Using such information, it creates an operational schedule for the optimal use of surplus PV power, starting the washing machine and other appliances accordingly. SMA said the resulting increase in self-consumption reduces users’ electricity bills in real terms, making users more independent from rising electricity prices.

"Together with BSH, this is the first time we are testing the EEBus communication standard in practice," said Martin Volkmar, product manager in SMA's residential business unit. "The EEBus connects the Sunny Home Manager, as the energy manager, to home appliances made by the Bosch and Siemens brands so that all the relevant energy management data can be exchanged."

Volkmar adds that the more appliance manufacturers introduce the EEBus standard, the simpler and more all-encompassing household energy management will become. "If everyone is speaking the same language, this allows for the best possible coordination of all appliances in the system and permits the most effective energy cost savings.”

At its IFA booth, Germany’s Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (VDE) will also demonstrate the networking and communication options offered by the standard, which was developed as part of the EEBus Initiative and will one day be available to all home appliance manufacturers.

Established as a joint venture between Robert Bosch and Siemens AG in 1967, BSH Hausgeräte is now solely owned by Bosch. The group operates 43 factories in 13 countries in Europe, the U.S., Latin America and Asia.

SMA Smart Home can also be used with home appliances from Miele and heat pumps from Stiebel Eltron and Vaillant.
