India: Northern Central Railway turns to solar

In the region operated by NCR, more than 129 level crossing gates are already running on solar power. 130 to 140 more crossings are expected to be fitted with solar panels in the next financial year, says NCR.

The issue has been that without regular supply of electricity, crossing gates in more rural areas have not been functioning effectively, leading to accidents. The move to equip these crossings with solar power is seen to be an environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution according to NCR.
