Nissan launches home energy solution in the UK

Nissan has announced the U.K. launch of Nissan Energy Solar, its residential energy solution featuring solar panels, a battery and an energy management system.

Nissan states that the solution has been designed to allow homeowners in the U.K. to ‘reduce their energy bills and get more independence from the grid’, and states that residents taking advantage of the solution could see up to a 66% cut to their electricity bills.

“Over 880,000 U.K. homes already have solar panels installed,” says Nissan Energy Managing Director Francisco Carranza, “and they are seeing the benefits every day, from decreasing electricity bills to increasing property values.”

Nissan Energy Solar features a storage system developed in partnership with Swiss headquartered Eaton Energy. According to a product brochure, the xStorage home system includes a hybrid inverter and will be available in 4.2 kWh, 6 kWh and 7.5 kWh capacities, based on Nissan’s Li-ion technology, already used to power its electric vehicle.

Nissan manufactures Li-ion batteries at its plant in Sunderland in the U.K., which could be partly behind the decision to initially launch the energy solution there.

Residential installations in the U.K. have slowed dramatically since incentives for installation and sale of excess energy were removed, and replaced with the possiblity of charges for grid connection.

By including storage and energy management software as a package, Nissan looks to be aiming at maximizing self-consumption of PV generation, making the systems and their electricity bill cutting potential a more attractive prospect without the added incentive of payment for excess generation.
